site

the new electro club in belfort occupies one bay of an existing industrial building. through its position in the western part of this shed, the club opens onto a partially-covered public reception space. the parking places are sited in an extension of the outdoor space, keeping that space vehicle-free. the eastern part of the site is reserved for campers attending the festival, and is related to the building, 2 storeys of which are available for festival activities.

architectural programme

the large club occupies an entire aisle of the shed, emphasising its spatiality and adding to its industrial character. this means that once visitors have gone through the entrance doors, they are swallowed up and enter a new dimension, a black hole (the vortex), so that they can engage in a unique experience, which is the club's hallmark. along the entire length of their route, clubbers discover the programme's spaces - ticket office, cloakrooms, bars, smoking rooms - which take the form of shipping containers.

these "boxes" organise the space, creating areas with different purposes: reception, seating, green room. the movements resulting from this arrangement encourage exploration of the place and the people in it… depending on the numbers attending the evening events, the sub-spaces formed by the containers can be closed off. the dance floor is the real heart of the club and is positioned at the centre of the project, facing a row of containers occupied by the stage area. at the rear, the backstage area accommodates the dressing rooms, creating a suitable space for performers and technical teams to meet. the toilets, which are shared by the two clubs, are installed in the northern portion of the building. the small club, on the upper floor, boasts a view of the surrounding area and has its own entrance, which is related to the covered outdoor reception area.

container concept

re-using shipping containers of a standard size to organise the different spaces achieves an economy of resources. the modular nature of the system allows a tremendous flexibility of layout and rapid implementation. as a result, the internal layout will be modular and can be changed quickly and easily. in this proposal, 3 suggested layouts for the large club are presented. the strength of the materials used to construct shipping containers makes them ideal for resisting vandalism and for intensive use of the premises. lastly, using these modules creates a strong visual identity that is consistent with the industrial character of the space used.
