contextual concept

like a hinge, the proposed extension redefines the external spaces by enhancing the relationship with the built surroundings.

first of all, opening up the current rear schoolyard is a good way of reconnecting the buildings and outdoor spaces. the demolition of the outdoor gym, library and housing will free up the west side of the school, right up to the railway platform wall.

in order to provide the school with a better and hence a safer environment, the removal of the northern section of rue saint-sigismond is the second stage in implementing the new pivotal element in the school complex.

this decision will mean restricting the underpass to pedestrians only, with the aim of revitalising and making this access safer for users travelling from the north of the town to the sports area and public transport. however, a service access for the abbey and for deliveries to the school will remain in place.

furthermore, the planned development of the sports area, with a new refreshment stand, new parking spaces and the 2 sports halls, will greatly increase the number of pedestrians and road users. currently, this crossing is unsafe and, as it is, will not improve the quality of the roads in the borough. the decision to restrict the underpass to pedestrians in these future projects will offer real added value for users.

this means that the new building, which will accommodate the school's new programming requirements, will be built up against the station platform. the school's rear courtyard will be much enlarged, providing easier access to the station for schoolchildren, better access under the tracks to the sports area and a new flow between the rear playground and the playground of the former boarding school.

there are no technical issues with building along the platforms: in areas of general interest, it is possible to build along the boundary. for the sbb, it is possible to build up to 5m from the centre line of the track, which is the case. there are no particular noise or vibration issues, as the tracks in this sector are recent and switchless for direct trains.

what's more, the new building site is not directly linked to the existing buildings, which keeps disruption to a minimum and ensures that the rest of the establishment remains up and running during the construction work.

additionally, this siting provides direct access to the 2 station platforms. with the underpass becoming pedestrian only, if the sbb allows the central platform to be extended and approves this project, with access to platforms 1, 2 and 3 coming from the outside via staircases near the new building, this will make it easier for those students who arrive and leave by train.

this new school extension brings a new flow to the site, providing generous outdoor spaces and consistent usage.

architectural concept

its volume, position and materials mean that this new building provides a response to the surrounding geometry, plays with the external playgrounds and the two existing buildings, backs onto the railway and provides a new dynamic to meet the new needs of the collège de saint-maurice.

current school building

located on the ground floor of the current school are the reception, administration offices, teachers' areas and one of the 3 study rooms. the library is strategically placed at the centre of the site to accommodate the different users. similarly, a generous exhibition space occupies the centre of the building, giving the school a prominent position in the town. in a sense, it is the showcase for the users' events and productions. the upper floors have been renovated and are used for classes.

the theatre entrance has been made more private and is no longer directly linked to the school. a grand staircase leads directly to the foyer.

former boarding school building

the former boarding school, which provides a historic link with the abbey, houses the specific classrooms (biology, chemistry, physics, drawing, music and it) as well as a study room on the ground floor linked to the refectory for special occasions, and with the fablab on the fourth floor.

new building

the new building is entirely made up of classrooms. all the floors are arranged with three classrooms facing the school playground and two facing the boarding school playground. this means that the building is completely flexible for its users. the remaining study room is on the ground floor so that each of the three buildings can easily access one of them. a large entrance and wide corridors ensure the smooth functioning of this new building. the vertical links to the station platform provide a view of the imposing cliffs overlooking saint-maurice. on the first floor, there is direct access to the station platform, providing a more urban connection.
