city planning - nature in the city centre

the new bcv sion complex is made up of two administrative buildings linked by a densely-planted, user-friendly public space intended for residents of the neighbourhood and the entire city. with its location in the middle of the soft mobility corridor between the old town and the sous-gare neighbourhood, the parc des mayennets has been conferred a specific role in the cityscape. the aim of this project is to showcase the planting within this park in order to attract passers-by, providing them with a place to congregate and relax.

the layout of the new building is designed to be as low impact as possible, while preserving the building frontage on rue des mayennets. this new high, slim profile directly results from the desire to save floor space while at the same time serving as a landmark in the city. the area surrounding the existing headquarters has been redesigned to benefit the network of pedestrians lining the park, particularly in the place des cèdres, where a more urban character is presented.

conversion of the headquarters

coming from the place des cèdres, you enter the building through the pre-existing grand hall, which acts as a place where the staff and public can interact. here, people can meet, eat, work and relax. the guiding principle in the whole choice of the project is for the building, initially designed by suter, perraudin and zurbriggen, to be respected, both in terms of the way in which the workspaces are arranged and the atmosphere in this public reception area.

there is a transition into the private working areas in a controlled fashion, while retaining the original layout. the interior garden has also been re-created for the users of the two floors at the rear of the building. the upper ground floor serves as a transition to the other floors and is home to the services/marketing department. the three upper levels where the customer and finance/credit departments are located are reached via the existing staircases. the lower ground floor houses the service department, which is the department that is most closely connected with the outside world, as well as communal areas used by the employees; the basement contains archives and other storerooms.

a new landmark building for the banque cantonale

the new building stands in the middle of the park. the central valais region branch boasts a ground floor that is given over to receiving customers on the rue des mayennets. upstairs, workspaces for staff are split over three levels.

to ensure maximum flexibility in terms of usage, a central core serves radiating areas that can be arranged as required by the user by means of a light partitioning system. the rooms occupied by the general management division are distributed over the upper floors up to the 8th floor above ground level.

there is also additional space on all floors and within the main premises that have the same function. by dividing the space into smaller floors, this creates the option of letting out the space in the event of future reorganisations.

the new branch's facade takes its inspiration directly from the main building. the supporting structure is rendered in a contemporary idiom in prefabricated concrete. the infill elements with frames, window frames, inner walls and sunshades are incorporated into this system in a similar way as in the main building.

landscaping for the parc des mayennets

it is planned to increase the density of the planting at ground level while separating the spaces into islands of greenery. the entirety is designed to be homogeneous and allow traffic to pass based on a system of paths that criss-cross it. These islands extend right up to the edge of the development and are treated in different ways, from the children's playground to the facilities in the meeting zone on rue du chanoine berchtold.

the islands are shaped like gentle movements of land supported by concrete elements, which function as a foundation and enable the islands to be accessible from all sides.
