the construction of the rhône footbridge is part of a project on the scale of the city of sion. its aim is to create a dialogue between the city of sion, an urban landscape made dense by traffic, and a new infrastructure, the ella maillart high school and college, which will welcome 3,500 new young people in vissigen over the coming years. the desired connecting route is intended for soft mobility and far removed from all road traffic in order to allow the greatest possible continuity of travel with an optimized, direct flow detached from its surroundings. the constraints are clearly identifiable: the rhône flood clearance to be maintained, a park devoid of human activity to be avoided, the vissigen canal to be crossed and the underpass beneath the road canal to be descended. so many obstacles which, ultimately, thanks to a clear route, can make this journey distinctive and unprecedented in its use.

the thinking behind this project is concerned more with the circulation of a structuring soft-mobility route through a complex natural environment than with the strict design of a footbridge over the rhône. furthermore, the implementation timeline requires the site to be kept in its current state. this means maintaining access to the industries of the future ateliers park and access to the rhône pizzeria. as the route is optimal, only the demolition of one built wing is necessary for this first phase. for the second phase, all activities must cease in the ateliers park in order to carry out the renaturalization of the space, making it high-quality and operational in the event of a major flood. the proposed route differs from the recommendations of the specifications with the aim of improving the fluidity and attractiveness of the footbridge. the route appears as a single discreet and delicate line connecting the two ends. indeed, although the length of the route is similar to the proposal in the specifications, the number of curves is minimized, making the route more direct, legible and comfortable, particularly for cyclists. it thus becomes more competitive compared with the route via rue de la dixence. the radius of curvature is also improved compared with the solution in the specifications (39.25 m versus the minimum of 30 m recommended by the vss 40238 standard), allowing bicycles to circulate more easily and remain within their circulation space without risk of conflict with pedestrians.
